VOICED or UNVOICED/VOICELESS?

VOICED or UNVOICED?

There's been a lot of talk about voiced and unvoiced, but many people still seem to haven't gotten the idea right. Therefore, I will make things clearer between these two and try to help you identify them better.

Firstly, let's look at their definitions:

- Voiced means you use your voice when pronouncing the sound. By putting your hand on you throat, you will feel some vibration, which means you are using your vocal chords.

What happens when you make voiced sounds - http://americanenglishuniversity.com

- Unvoiced/voiceless means the opposite. If you do it right, you will not feel any vibration on your throat. In this case, you're using air combined with you lips, tongue, and teeth to make sounds.

Now, here are some consonants of voiced and unvoiced sounds:

VOICED:

b, d, th (as in then), v, l, r, z, j (as in jet).

UNVOICED/VOICELESS:

k, t, p, s, sh, ch, th (as in think).

Tips: listen to how native speakers pronounce and try to mimic them.
