LISTENING TIPS

LISTENING TIPS
Many non-native English speakers find listening to English Conversations very difficult. Some may find it hard to catch phrases and words, while some will not understand common idioms.

I will hereby provide you with some advice:

Strategies:

First, don't focus on details or specific words, just concentrate on the main ideas.

Don't translate into your mother tongue (since translating sometimes creates a barrier that blocks you from the speaker).

Learning tips:

Practice listening everyday. First start from your level (beginner, intermediate or advanced). There are a lot of audio CDs available.

Have a conversation with a native speaker. Don't worry, that person will somehow repeat what they just said, in order for you to get the message.

You can also listen to some video clips and write down what you can remember from the clip. After that, check the answer to see if you got it right.

Exam tips:

You should make most of your listening test:
- Listen to the specific information you want.
- Try and anticipate what the speaker is going to say
- Read, listen and write at the same time so as not to miss any questions or lack time answering them.
- Focus on what the question asked you.
- Last but not least, try to relax.
