Pronouncing -s/-es:

There are three ways of doing this:

  • [S]
  • [Z]
  • [IZ]
These are the ways to identify which word belongs to which group:
  • [IZ]: probably the easiest to recognize, because words that have plural forms which are pronounced [IZ] end with -ch, -ge, -x, -c, -s, -ss, -z, and -sh.
  • [S]: let's choose the words ending with -k, -t, -p, -f, -th, -gh, -ph (voiceless sounds).
  • [Z]: the unchosen endings are the ones you need (voiced sounds).
(Please note that words listed above may add -e at the end and not change their nature)
Examples:
  • [IZ]: watches, washes, boxes, braces, misses, amazes, bridges, buses.
  • [S]: cups, bats, kicks, beliefs, maths, laughs, graphs.
  • [Z]: nouns, verbs, mums, dads, knives, roars, bugs, feels, boys, flaws.
