 EXPRESSIONS WITH "HIT"

When we hear the word "hit", we often think of an action of applying force on something, like a baseball player hitting the ball with his bat. But don't you know that "hit" comes with many interesting expressions?

Let's look at some common expressions:

Hit the hay: go to bed. This expression originated from the old days when people used to sleep in barns with lots of hay.
E.g. "When do you go to bed?" - "I often hit the hay at 10:00 p.m."

Hit the road: to travel.
E.g. "Don't just stay at home. Go out and hit the road!"

Hit the books: it's time to study.
E.g. "Jimmy's grades are very low. I think it's time he hit the books."

Hit bottom: something that has reached its lowest point and cannot go lower.
E.g. "The price of gold has hit bottom, so let's buy some gold while it's cheap."

Hit the spot: to achieve a satisfying goal.
E.g. "KFC has really hit the spot after introducing the new Combo Offer, a big meal with a reasonable price!"

Hit the ceiling: to become very angry, even violent.
E.g. "The man hit the ceiling because his son ruined the family reputation by robbing a neighbor's home.
